A banner ad is basically a graphic, text or an image displayed on a website that aims to promote a company’s product or service. Think of it as a billboard a visitor sees while navigating your page. The banner ad itself is actually a collection of small HTML codes, but their importance in internet marketing and business is significant.
Due to the banner ads graphic elements, these ads are similar to those you see in printed media such as magazines and newspapers. However, due to the coding, these banner ads have the ability to instantly, direct the user to the advertiser’s main web page. This coding can also help you track your traffic giving detail about your audience.

Banner ads vary in sizes and orientation but will often come in rectangular shape and are 486 x 60 pixels high (full banner). There is actually no universal rule when it comes to banner ad file sizes, as the goal is to have the ad fit in seemlessly into the web page. Hence the size of the banner ultimately depends on the website where it will be displayed.
“The brands that can connect with their clients in a real way, will win”
Gary Vaynerchuck
It may be worth noting that certain sites may impose limits to banner sizes since it adds up to the total size of the web page they are displayed on. Huge banners with animated graphics may result in a slower less responsive website.
Since banner ads are such an efficient method of marketing they can’t be left out of any money making or marketing recipe. You can use the power of banner ads to market your own business on other websites to gain traffic. Alternatively, you can use these ads to market affiliate products or link to make money through commissions.

If you are interested in displaying or posting a banner on a particular website, you can reach out to the publisher to discuss any terms and conditions like banner size and eligible content. Alternatively you can pay a banner network to post the ad on a number of websites. I honestly do not recommend this method as you then have very little control over the quality of the website that your add is placed and this may affect the quality of traffic you recieve. But if you’re just looking to get your brand out there with little maintenance then you can definitely consider this option.
